Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth with a typical growth rate of 3 – 10 cm per day but in good conditions some species can also grow up to nearly a metre per day. The bamboo selected for making our coffins is coming from the species Phyllostachus Pubescens, also known as “builders bamboo” in Asia, as it is used in making architectural structures such as houses, bridges or for scaffolding. Its special tubular hollow structure gives it a strength-to-weight ratio which outperforms most other materials, even steel, whilst being incredibly flexible at the same time. As a bamboo grove also produces 30% more oxygen than trees, it is becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly material. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet; it grows up to a meter per day and absorbs more CO2 for it's weight then any other plant.

Several processes are needed to transform a natural bamboo culm into a lasting building material, which mainly involves the removal of starch, often splitting the cone into strips and the correct process of drying.

All of our coffins are...

  • 100% natural and biodegradable
  • Appropriate for cremation and burial

Coffin / Casket Size

We recommend that the internal dimensions are at least the height plus 2” (50mm) and the width of the shoulders plus 2” (50mm) of the deceased, if you need help with size conversion click here to go our conversion guide.

Engraving

You can either have the name plates engraved by us (using Engraving lines 1,2 & 3 when you order) or you can arrange for this to be done yourself or by your Funeral Director).

How strong are the coffins?

All of our coffins are weight tested to carry 150 kg or 23 stone and can be reinforced further if necessary.

Can the Coffins be used for a cremation?

All of the coffins we sell are suitable for burial or cremation and are supplied with solid flat bases with finger grips and load bearing handles. They have all been tested specifically for cremation by Marchwood Scientific Services Ltd. in accordance with the Coffin and Casket testing protocol as laid out by the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers Association.

If you are purchasing and cardboard coffin for a cremation please check with you Funeral director if they require a Plywood base, all of our standard cardboard coffins come with a Cremation base, but we have seen a few funeral homes who require the base to be plywood.

What’s the difference between a coffin and a casket?

A coffin is wider at the shoulders than it is at the head or foot, while a casket is rectangular in shape, with straight sides between head and foot.
